With the fifth smoked, at about 7 pm of March 13, 2013, the conclave, in front of a packed crowd in St. Peter’s Square, has chosen the new Pope: he is Jorge Mario Bergoglio from Argentina. The newly elected Pope boasts many firsts: he is the first to choose the name Francesco, the first Pope from South America and the first Jesuit. 76 years, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, was appointed cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II and in 2005 had touched the election (he had the most votes but it seems that asked not to be elected and the conclave chose Ratzinger). He has distant Italian ancestry (Piedmont) and has a reputation as a reformer, humble and shy person and attentive to the poor; “brothers and sisters, good evening” he began as soon as it approached from the central loggia of St. Peter, emphasizing that he is Pope “nearly from the end of the world”. Francis Pope then pronounced the Our Father for the “Bishop Emeritus Benedict XVI” and addressed to the faithful asking for support.
